Palma City Council reinforces the taxi service during the winter with 200 more vehicles
From the 500 taxis that could circulate in Palma in the low season months in recent years, now there are more than 700.
Palma City Council and the main taxi associations have agreed to reinforce the number of vehicles that will circulate in the city during the winter.
The main aim is to improve the service. «It is preferable to have taxis waiting at taxi ranks rather than queues of people waiting for taxis,» said Toni Bauzà, president of the Agrupación Empresarial de Autotaxi de las Islas Baleares (Balearic Islands Taxi Association).
During the low season, according to the Balearic Islands Autotaxi Association, the taxi timetable limitations have until now meant that drivers have had to be dispensed with. In many cases, the staff changed sector and could not be found again and the lack of drivers increased. That is why this reinforcement will also help to ensure the summer campaign.
This winter will serve as a test to see whether or not the number of taxis in circulation should be readjusted in the future. The agreement also maintains the reinforcement of the service during the key Christmas eve. In this way, Palma’s more than 1,200 taxis will be able to work and will be exempt from the shift and holiday system. It remains to be seen, however, warn taxi drivers, how seasonality and the price of fuel will affect taxi activity.
